Summary

A beautiful, heartfelt, funny and inspiring collection of photographs capturing the spirit of a city

In the summer of 2010, photographer Brandon Stanton set out on an ambitious project: to single-handedly create a photographic census of New York City。  Armed with his camera, he began crisscrossing the city, covering thousands of miles on foot, all in an attempt to capture New Yorkers and their stories。  The result of these efforts was a vibrant blog he called "Humans of New York," in which his photos were featured alongside quotes and anecdotes。

Humans of New York is the book inspired by the Internet sensation。 With four hundred color photos, including exclusive portraits and all-new stories, Humans of New York is a stunning collection of images that showcases the outsized personalities of New York。

Surprising and moving, Humans of New York is a celebration of individuality and a tribute to the spirit of the city。

One of my favorite books and a lovely gift for friends

While Stanton's photography (by my opinion) does not match the storytelling of a Steve McCurry or a Dawoud Bey, the sheer breadth of his work and the energy at which he places in capturing and interviewing his subjects makes HONY an undeniably significant achievement。 While it can be accused of being a little gimmicky, HONY is excellent coffee table material, a shallow toe dip into the metropolis of New York City with a decidedly sunny tone。 Some page layout choices from the publisher came off t While Stanton's photography (by my opinion) does not match the storytelling of a Steve McCurry or a Dawoud Bey, the sheer breadth of his work and the energy at which he places in capturing and interviewing his subjects makes HONY an undeniably significant achievement。 While it can be accused of being a little gimmicky, HONY is excellent coffee table material, a shallow toe dip into the metropolis of New York City with a decidedly sunny tone。 Some page layout choices from the publisher came off to me as sloppy。 。。。more

Alexa, play “Welcome to New York” by Taylor Swift。 I borrowed this from a coworker and it was fascinating! NYC truly is a melting pot of cultures and different types of people。 It was awesome to see so many unique individuals who all represent the city so well。 These pictures made me smile (mostly) and I think everyone would enjoy this collection of photos。 😊

An incredibly interesting photography book that I spent most of this Sunday poring over。 So much detail packed in, I'm sure I'll spot many new things when I go back。 You really do get a sense of the range of Human Diversity in New York, a city that serves as a microcosm of the wider world。 It really is a wonderful city filled with so many different and interesting people。 Beautiful people。 White, Balck, Asian, Latino, straight, gay, trans, wheelchair-bound, Upper class, Working class, homeless, An incredibly interesting photography book that I spent most of this Sunday poring over。 So much detail packed in, I'm sure I'll spot many new things when I go back。 You really do get a sense of the range of Human Diversity in New York, a city that serves as a microcosm of the wider world。 It really is a wonderful city filled with so many different and interesting people。 Beautiful people。 White, Balck, Asian, Latino, straight, gay, trans, wheelchair-bound, Upper class, Working class, homeless, children and elderly, this book showcases it all。 So many stories and experiences captured in these portraits and snippets that say so much and yet only a fraction of who these people are。This book is very special。 。。。more

Great photography book。 It's beautifully done and the photos are gorgeous-- and the short captions are often funny and sweet。 This felt more uplifting but a little less fulfilling as Humans by Stanton。 Out of the two I liked Humans more (and it's now one of my favorite books of all time) but this was excellent as well。 This collection made me really miss New York and remember why I love it there。 I think this book is about quirkiness, fashion and finding people full of joie de vivre, where Human Great photography book。 It's beautifully done and the photos are gorgeous-- and the short captions are often funny and sweet。 This felt more uplifting but a little less fulfilling as Humans by Stanton。 Out of the two I liked Humans more (and it's now one of my favorite books of all time) but this was excellent as well。 This collection made me really miss New York and remember why I love it there。 I think this book is about quirkiness, fashion and finding people full of joie de vivre, where Humans was more about hearing about other people's struggles, or most transformational moments。 There's much more of a story with each photo in in Humans, where this collection felt like a cool photography coffee table book。 I think this book would serve well as a book for anyone who loves New York, just moved there as a student, or wants something happy to flip through。 Humans is the one I would recommend to readers who enjoy poetry and sad stories。 。。。more

This was a fun adventure through New York! While reading about a place can be nice, I've always connected more with pictures and it's interesting to see just how diverse and even crazy New York can be。 This was a fun adventure through New York! Brandon's photography is beautiful。 I would prefer to see less photos of the hands loaded with jewelry and more faces。 Still a great uplifting work of art。 Brandon's photography is beautiful。 I would prefer to see less photos of the hands loaded with jewelry and more faces。 Still a great uplifting work of art。 。。。more

This is a collection of photographs with an apt tag or a story which gives a unique perspective of humans life in general, in Newyork。 For me personally, this book brightens up my day。You'll get to understand how people celebrate small small things and how challenging life was for few people。 Overall, I really enjoyed reading this book and enjoyed the images。 The quality of the book is also something I admire。 This is a collection of photographs with an apt tag or a story which gives a unique perspective of humans life in general, in Newyork。 For me personally, this book brightens up my day。You'll get to understand how people celebrate small small things and how challenging life was for few people。 Overall, I really enjoyed reading this book and enjoyed the images。 The quality of the book is also something I admire。 。。。more

I followed Brandon on Twitter since his follower was only 8 people and he just dropped out of his mainstream job in Manhattan。 Seeing HONY grew all over the places with his personal touch made me proud of my instinct to adore his soul, before all the flash and fame。 I am now moving on to the next one ;)

Absolutely loved this book。 The author is a photographer and blogger who takes photos of ordinary people and interviews them about their life and puts quotes from them under the picture。 For instance, under a photo of a very thoughtful-looking girl is the quote "He always says I'm just like my mother。 He hates my mother。" There are pictures of people from all walks of life and I just wanted to give all of them a hug。 His pictures of kids are just adorable。 This was a down-load from the library。 Absolutely loved this book。 The author is a photographer and blogger who takes photos of ordinary people and interviews them about their life and puts quotes from them under the picture。 For instance, under a photo of a very thoughtful-looking girl is the quote "He always says I'm just like my mother。 He hates my mother。" There are pictures of people from all walks of life and I just wanted to give all of them a hug。 His pictures of kids are just adorable。 This was a down-load from the library。 I am going to see if the library has the actual book as I think that would be a better experience。 。。。more

Cool pictures。 Very few captions of interest。 I follow the blog, so I was expecting more dialogue about the photos。

Such a fun book! Made me snicker, while also made me think。

This is the second book I've read from this author。 This one is full of unique, beautiful people from all walks of life in New York City。 Shows the diversity of the human race。 I didn't enjoy this one as much as Humans because I like to know more of the story that goes with the pictures。 Also, the captions were often hard to read, I guess due to the font or perhaps the light font coloring。 Still, it's a great book。 This is the second book I've read from this author。 This one is full of unique, beautiful people from all walks of life in New York City。 Shows the diversity of the human race。 I didn't enjoy this one as much as Humans because I like to know more of the story that goes with the pictures。 Also, the captions were often hard to read, I guess due to the font or perhaps the light font coloring。 Still, it's a great book。 。。。more

Another awesome book by Brandon Stanton of HONY。 It has been fun to see how his project has progressed over the years。 At first, he was giving commentary and now people are spending hours with him to tell their stories。 Can't wait to see if he releases another book but until them I'm on his Instagram。 Another awesome book by Brandon Stanton of HONY。 It has been fun to see how his project has progressed over the years。 At first, he was giving commentary and now people are spending hours with him to tell their stories。 Can't wait to see if he releases another book but until them I'm on his Instagram。 。。。more

I saw a documentary several years ago about a woman who took candid, random photos of people using a Rolleiflex camera。 The film was haunting - this woman's photos spoke volumes。 I'd never seen anything like it in a compilation before。 I was hoping "Humans of New York" would be very similar。 Though this photographer asked for permission and very often even had people pose, the outcome was still amazing。 I enjoyed the small facts or bits of conversation the photographer included。 Some made me rea I saw a documentary several years ago about a woman who took candid, random photos of people using a Rolleiflex camera。 The film was haunting - this woman's photos spoke volumes。 I'd never seen anything like it in a compilation before。 I was hoping "Humans of New York" would be very similar。 Though this photographer asked for permission and very often even had people pose, the outcome was still amazing。 I enjoyed the small facts or bits of conversation the photographer included。 Some made me realize my life is quite small by comparison to these people on the pages, but others made me breathe deeply as they displayed courage, love, and wisdom I can only aspire to earn。 Everyone should read this book。 It is captivating。 It only takes an hour or two to read and truly study each page, but it would be a welcome addition to any collection of books to peruse when the mood strikes you。 It would also make an amazing gift。 。。。more
